After going 140 hours without food, a Taiwanese hunger striker protesting alleged electoral "malfeasance" was rushed to the hospital at 10:35 am (CST) on September 19 after suffering a spike in his blood pressure and heart rate.

In a video posted by Taiwanese newspaper United Daily News (UDN), Shih-Hsiu Huang's rapidly-beating heart can be heard over a monitor. UDN reported that Huang's heart rate had risen rapidly, from 78 to 98 to 110 beats per minute.
Two other pro-democracy activists immediately picked up where Huang left off. “We will honor Huang's sacrifice of by carrying on the hunger strike for as long as it takes,” said Yen-Peng Liao, 37, a radiation expert and co-founder of the nuclear referendum campaign.
In response, top climate scientists including Nobel Prize winner James Hansen, Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Rhodes, and leading environmentalists from around the world sent an open letter to Taiwanese President 蔡英文 Tsai Ing-wen, urging that she allow the nuclear referendum to go forward.
“We urge you and the Central Election Commission (CEC) to accept all signatures delivered before the official deadline of September 14, and to treat the petitioners fairly," the scientists and scholars wrote.
"Whether or not you support nuclear power, it is a vital that the people of Taiwan be able to deliberate and decide on this matter for themselves.”
Coincidentally, Dr. Hansen landed in Taiwan at 5:40 am (CST) September 20 to receive the prestigious Tang Prize, which is known as the "Asian Nobel prize." Each prize comes with a $1.34 million cash award.
Hansen will share the award with Veerabhadran Ramanathan, a scientist who the Tang Prize calls "the first to point out the very significant greenhouse effects of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)."
Over the last several years, Hansen has become one of the most high-profile advocates of nuclear power in the world. In its announcement, the Tang Prize noted that Hansen "eloquently and knowledgeably advocates effective technologies and public policies for [climate change] mitigation."
Dr. Hansen and Dr. Ramanathan will accept the Tang Prize at a ceremony at the National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei City on Friday, September 21.
The second of the two new hunger strikers is Han-Ting Hou, 侯漢廷 29, who is also running for Taipei City Council.
